Ever since I laid eyes on my gorgeous vintage leather jacket from a thrift store in New York I’ve been HOOKED on thrifting because who doesn’t love a good thrift find? What I love most about thrifting is you’re able to upcycle old clothing and items, turning them into your own NEW, one-of-a-kind pieces that will have everyone asking where it’s from. With 2025 shaping up to be the era of sustainability, why not play your part and look chic while doing it? Upcycling is a trend that’s here to stay. So, as a Boston Local, let’s dive into the top thrift and upcycling spots where you can discover your perfect thrift find too!
Groovy Thrifting

If you’re looking for one of the best thrift stores with a wide range of upcycled clothes, Groovy Thrifty IS A MUST. They have a dedicated section in-store and online featuring upcycled pieces they’ve hand-made themselves. If you wanna elevate your style, I can’t stop thinking about their patchwork jeans and customized Boston merch at their spot in Brighton!
The Garment District

I’m letting you in on one of my secret thrift stores that I freaking love. Hidden on the corner of Broadway Street in Cambridge is The Garment District. This store is awesome if you’re in need of a STATEMENT piece to up your wardrobe. Want to upcycle on your own…. check out their $2 T-shirt bin and turn it into your own creative fashion statement. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s so cute inside! I’m absolutely obsessed with this place, and I know you will be too!
Vivant Vintage

Vivant in Allston/on Newbury Street is definitely a more up-scale thrift store with true authentic vintage pieces. If you’re searching for one-of-a-kind items, this place is great for that! On top of that, they have a wide variety of upcycled options, like their beautiful reworked Carhartt Patchwork Jacket. Vivant has a huge focus on ways to upcycle simple things like old shirts into a new trendy dress.
Buffalo Exchange

Thrifting can sometimes be expensive, so if you’re looking for a good middle ground in prices, Buffalo Exchange in Brookline is perfect. They sell new and old recycled fashion and still have so many good thrift options that are better quality than your average thrift store while not having to pay an insane amount. I love it because you have a range of cheap-to-more expensive options/some hidden gems of vintage sections if you’re lucky.
Retrospect

If you’re on the hunt for furniture or things to put around the house, Retrospect has the cutest little trinkets and decor. ANYTHING IS FAIR GAME. If you see a couch you like or a painting on the wall, you can just grab it and ring it up. The store has all sorts of antique things that you’re able to upcycle and refurbish to fit your home/apartment. I always enjoy coming here because you truly never know what you will find or that you even needed it.
